Grove and Designer Lighting improve service delivery within the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality

Smarter and faster service delivery in East London

In servicing city infrastructure for the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, Dean Fanoe, owner of Designer Lighting is not only tasked to maintain the upkeep of street lights, traffic signals and road surfaces but also with the managing of the city fault reporting call centre.

As lighting contractors, the company had an existing app which did not fulfil their requirements to maintain street light and traffic light infrastructure in the Eastern Cape.

They partnered with the Grove software development team to create a mobile app and a web portal for the internal team to manage resources for fault reporting. Residents can use the app to report high mast lighting issues in their areas enabling the Designer Lighting team to quickly identify and respond to infrastructure issues in those areas.

Here’s how the app works

Once a user registers in the app, they can receive push notifications for the area they live in as well as areas they travel through to notify them if there is an incident (for example an area power outage of load shedding—which is very likely to happen in South Africa against the backdrop of its current Eskom crisis). Beyond the advantage for the general public, the app allows technicians to access faults assigned to them and the ability to update the status of the faults they’re working on. For ease of work, Grove added chat functionality which allows them to communicate with the call centre or other technicians. The web portal manages the whole solution ecosystem, equipment, faults, users, notices etc. making this the hub for assigning work to technicians, communicating to customers and drawing reports.

Key features

  • Secure login: Register or update an account using a secure one-time password.
  • Log faults: Report a fault within minutes—for example, a faulty street light or a traffic light not working in your area.
  • Track status on the reported faults: Receive updates on the progress of your logged fault.
  • Chat to Call Centre: The call centre is always on standby with 24/7 customer support available.
  • Area reports: Get notifications on issues or maintenance in your area.
  • Emergency numbers: Quick access to emergency numbers in your area.

Big strides have been made in 2018, and the new Designer Lighting app was officially launched on 11 November by the Buffalo City Municipality. “We are excited to be part of improved service delivery and customer experiences in East London area,” says Designer Lighting project leader, Matthew Hadley. “The app really allows the community to share ideas, issues and most of all collaborate in real-time with all parties involved so we can just get things done!”

The Grove development team is currently working on additional phases of the Designer Lighting app, adding more features and extending the functionality thereof. “Grove has been a great development partner and we look forward to launching the next phases of the project in early 2019." Keep an eye out for further developments on this project.

The app can be downloaded in the Apple App and Google Play store. You can visit the Designer Lighting for further detail https://www.designerlighting.co.za
